Simple design & utility

I have a big weakness for all things stationary. Planners, notebooks, writing tools or cases. So when I stumbled upon La based company This is Ground I had to share the amazing art they create. The designs are simple yet practical. Small enough as a traveller to pack light while still fitting in everything you need for a day on the go.

EASE

|| January ||

It is a month known for new beginnings, getting re-organised and planning for the year ahead. Over the past few weeks I have been playing with my new camera, a beautiful Canon 70D - I have opened my photographic world up to video & cant wait to get stuck in.

This week in particular has been pretty crazy, we have explored another ski resort, post to come, had our first experience night skiing at Mt Norquay, and climbed Sulphur Mt to get stunning views across our little town of Banff.

In a nutshell, we have reached our last few months of travelling Canada, I have had my first hair cut in well over a year & I'm starting to get some designs going for my photography business for when I return back to the UK. Exciting times ahead!

GREY

Written by Julie for Orchid Grey

|| North ||

The heady spice of wood smoke… the first beacon of home welcoming me North. In my home state of Maine, the scent of burning wood permeates every activity from late-September through ’till March or April (and in some years… early May). Even now, the odd whiff mysteriously drifting through the air in Philly has the power to instantly transport me. It punctuates the air in fall and winter, mixing with the icy stillness of an impending snowstorm, enveloping me like a security blanket. I never expected to be so tied to where I grew up, tied to the woods. For so long, I resisted. But no longer can I deny the softness that befalls my shoulders, the lack of tension that typically knits my brow… symptoms of stress leaving my body as I leave the city behind. That exciting, busy city life and all its secret stress — the kind you don’t even realize you’re burdened with – growing smaller in my rear view mirror as I navigate towards the place I will always consider my true home.

It’s been three years since I traveled to that little home in the woods for Thanksgiving, having lived too far away to make the trip while residing in Pittsburgh, and the time away was welcomed with open arms. From expressway to highway, highway to state road, and finally to the long and winding dirt track that leads to the home I grew up in. No cell phone service, no internet. No neighbors for miles. And snow in the forecast. For my busy, always working mind, it was the kind of forced quietude that I needed. A time to step away from the noise of the world, reset, and find some inspiration for inspiration’s sake. Like clockwork, not long after my crack-of-dawn arrival the snow began to fly and in a few short hours the wild land outside was blanketed in sixteen inches of perfect, pristine snow. Winter in Maine is a reminder to slow down, take your time. The roads may be treacherous, but there’s a warmth that awaits at the end of the drive.

LITERATURE

|| 10 of the most beautiful lines in literature ||

Every year I like to find at least one book that I can read over & over. In the past it has been The Harry Potter series, some books from the genius J.R.Tolkien, particularly The Hobbit, even a little Game of Thrones borrowed from my Pappa. Over the past year blogging has helped me grow as a writer, communicating and connecting with others. This blog has adapted with me, becoming a stronger creative platform for myself, full of things that I am inspired by; Starting with the written word of artists, so here are my 10 favourite lines in literature...

“How wild it was, to let it be.”
—Cheryl Strayed, Wild

“Sometimes I can feel my bones straining under the weight of all the lives I’m not living.”
—Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

“In our village, folks say God crumbles up the old moon into stars.”
—Alexander Solzhenitsyn, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

“It does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that.”
—J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

"And the rest is rust and stardust"
-Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita

“May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

“Every flight begins with a fall.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

“I hope she'll be a fool -- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”
― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”

- George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons

"If it’s both terrifying and amazing then you should definitely pursue it."

-Erada

What a way to spend New Years Eve. Looking out across the Canadian Rockies with the sun gently melting the ice & the wind keeping you wrapped up. It was a bluebird day. I was skiing for the second time since the snow arrived, it feels a lot more natural to me to say the least...though the tail bone might be recovered enough by now to snowboard again!

At Midnight back in town everyone gathered on Banff Ave. to see in the New Year with fireworks, & watch our little mountain town light up.

Every year I love to make a short bucket list. A few dreams & experiences to aim for. My bucket list for this past year consisted of a bunch of crazy plans, snorkelling the barrier reef, skydiving and visiting Bali to name a few! This year it's just as ambitious...

- To see the Northern Lights         - To Ice Skate on Lake Louise
- To go Husky Sledging               - To hug my family!
- To buy a home with the boy         - To buy our dog, Sid

2015 Lets make it happen.
Wishing you all a happy, healthy New Years.
